The artist
Liene Ešenvalde

„I paint in silence.“
I am an artist with an ekphrastic way of seeing the world. I paint in silence, because I believe that is exactly where you can feel what gets lost in the noise of the everyday. I want to paint a moment in which the viewer, too, can pause for a while, breathe in, and hear themselves.
My abstract paintings are stories about time, presence and the things we hold dear. In painting I am drawn not to what we see but to what we feel, and so abstraction seems to me the truest language. In grounded colours, in the textures of different materials and in intuitive lines, I look for what stays between the words in ordinary days. The words, in turn, help me begin an inner conversation about the searching and the finding.
In my practice I join two mediums especially close to me: painting and poetry. Some of the works are accompanied by autoekfrāzes, texts that do not describe the painting but open a conversation with it, uncovering its meaning and its deeper layers.
Although painting has been a passion of mine for many years, only recently did it become my profession. In the autumn of 2025 I opened my studio in Riga. I have studied painting with several artists, and I am now continuing to develop my path in the master's programme at the Art Academy of Latvia.
In March 2026 I held my debut solo exhibition, „THE FIRST“, about first times, the courage to take the first steps, and the restless human wish to grow. A life holds so many firsts: you turn grey, and still you long for one more first.
If you too would like to pause for a moment, to listen and to feel, look through my collection of paintings. Perhaps one of the stories speaks to exactly you.
